Readings in Japanese Culture: The Texts and Textures of Modern Tradition

This class would investigate the modern articulation of discourse on tradition (dentō) and the rise of the folklore movement in the early twentieth century. Themes include late nineteenth-century political, literary, and art collecting trends, nationhood and nationalism, historical frameworks and contexts, memory and nostalgia, and close readings of Yanagita Kunio and other folklore study founders.
